What is a PUTZ House?

Recently I added some vintage Christmas decor to the website. I had a couple of these cute little glitter houses and when I refer to them I call them "Putz" houses. One of my blog readers asked me what is was or why it was called a Putz House.

It is actually a Pennsylvania term for a small village that is usually placed under the tree. I found an article from the Victoriana Magazine about a Victorian Christmas. Here they mention the origin coming from the Moravians in Germany.

I've also seen other articles mention that the name came about from what the people in the Pennsylvania Dutch area call "putzing around the house." Working on little projects here and there, taking your good old time.

Then when I saw it mentioned that the term "putz" can be offensive to some cultures.

Ut oh. Maybe it's best if I just call them "glitter" houses!

Still, they're awfully cute.

Sneak Peek #2 - Scottie Dog, Rhinestone Earrings, Scatter Pins, Bracelet, Vintage Crepe Paper & Cards

And now for the second installment of this weeks SNEAK PEEK. Lots of jewelry for those who like to dress it up vintage style!

How about a gold filled bangle with etched decoration?

or a gold toned Scottie dog? Made of white metal...delicate but looks sturdy like cast iron.

The photo doesn't do these darling purple flower rhinestone earrings justice. Screwbacks.

These look like earrings but they are really scatter pins.

When do you get a chance to find vintage crepe paper streamers ...unused? I have twelve of these rolls and I'm selling them three at a time.
Vintage cards. I love these. So sweeeeeet.

And don't forget to write! At first I thought this was a hanky holder until I looked inside.

The envelopes and pen are for example to show you how it was used.

And this was interesting. It looks like an old salt spoon (possibly sterling, not sure if it is just silverplated) was turned into a pin. So cute!
I'll be working on getting them all listed to the website. Dial up internet may be slow but I do not give up too easily! Hopefully our high speed will be returned tomorrow. We'll see!

New Arrival Sneak Peek #1

Where there's a will, there's a way. I'm back online by using dial-up connection! Yeah!

During my time away from the internet I did a little antiquing and found some goodies. I'm calling this sneak peek #1 because I have to finish taking photos.
These old paper paychecks (I'm guessing) are from the years 1873 and 1875. Most even have the signatures on the back!
Another "Putz" Christmas house. I did receive a question about what PUTZ is. It is a Pennsylvania Dutch term, I discovered! I didn't know it was related to this area. Others may know these houses as a Glitter house.
I thought this was neat and very different! A pin cushion and must have been for laundry as the top reads "LAUNDRY ACCOUNT." Maybe for the serving staff when they did the house owner's laundry? Not sure but it is an oldie but goodie. Just think, you could keep track of your undies with this.
Thank you, these have SOLD!

Some pretty pastel shoe molds or stretchers as some like to call them.

Thank you, this has SOLD!

A vintage biscuit or storage jar. Love the green tin lid. So vintage!

Thank you, this has SOLD!

And an old copy of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass. Great illustrations! A great find for either a book collector or a crafter. (Although I hate to think of pages being torn out. Photocopied, maybe?

I'll be back with more. Thanks for staying tuned while I've been MIA with my internet troubles.

Let's hope lightning doesn't strike twice.

TEMPORARILY OFFLINE - BE BACK SOON WITH NEW ARRIVALS

Be back soon and get to your comments as soon as possible.

Pink Lustreware "Soft Paste" Cup & Saucer

Recently I did a Pink Saturday post on my pink lustreware collection. It is not very big...not in comparison to my LuRay pastels collection as seen here.

It seems as though I can't stay away from pink. But really, if you're reading this blog...then you probably like the color almost as much, if not more, than I do.

While I was shopping for my inventory this past weekend I came across four of these cups and saucers. My eye was drawn to them immediately. Yet they were located near the bottom of an antique dealer's shelf, covered with lots of dust. I decided if I bought all four, I could keep one and sell the other three, thus feeding my addiction further. See how this works?

Unfortunately one of them had a crack in it. But after all these years (these babies are OLD!) it was still in pretty good condition. This is the one I decided to keep. The photo above is one of the other three, without any chips or cracks. They are for sale on my website, Bella Rosa Antiques.

Here is a little information on pink lustre found from an article called "Beginner's Guide to Pink Lustreware" by Danielle L.

Pink lustreware was popular between 1790-1850 . It was manufactured by many pottery factories in England. Swansea and Sunderland potteries were particularly prolific in the making of pink lustreware. Pink lustre is created by adding a solution of metallic copper to a white or cream bodied piece of pottery prior to firing.

I'm excited about adding my tea cup and saucer to my collection. I enjoy reading the history behind the items I find. Now, wouldn't it be even more fascinating to find out where this cup and saucer has been all these years? Who owned it and what was it like in the 1800's?

This is why I love antiques. I hope you enjoyed my post, too.
