Let's Talk Vintage #93: The Great Furniture Dash

Welcome to Let's Talk Vintage!

This is where you will find a little slice of vintage goodness, beginning each Tuesday at 9 am, out here on the East Coast.

We all gather together to ooh and ahhh over each other's projects, collections, photos, junkin' hauls and more!

Today I am sharing photos of the furniture the hubby and I flooded the shop with, as my shop-mate moved out. It was sad to see her go, she and I complimented each other well. But, I don't want to dwell on what isn't going to be so I am focusing on how to improve the store and trying to make connections with my customers.

So we had to make a big dash for furniture ...which coming off of a vacation made it all the more difficult, but we realized there were quite a few holes where my friend had her things and hit the ground running.

My talented hubby painted the black secretary in the two photos above.

We received this vanity from my step-daughter... she was going to paint it but now that she is a Mama-to-be, her focus is on a baby's room.

I painted it with white chalk-paint and did the two drawers with a pretty sea foam green, with a white wash over it which really made it look beachy.

Here are some other things we worked on and brought in:

 

This piece only lasted one day... it was purchased

to use as a changing table. I am finding out this is

a new trend... saves the young parents money

by using it as the child's dresser after it is not needed.

 

We used more of our Annie Sloan chalk paint

in "Antoinette", to highlight the drawer "handles."

 

A little bit of aqua in the shop is a nice pop of color so I

worked on this small half-moon side table.

It goes well with my beach themed items.

 

This is a very petite corner cupboard.

Great for small space living!

 

My white and gray stenciled "Café Paris"

pie crust table finally sold so I added this

one to the shop as an alternative to the

darker colors in the shop. I decided not to

stencil, still deciding if stenciled or

non-stenciled pieces sell better.

 

I had just created a post on Facebook about this neat

wall shelf that I thought gardeners would love....

and it sold the first day!

 

 

Not everything can be furniture so I have been

adding a lot of smalls, too. An old fishing

creel and gardener's hat. I love how they

look against this old chippy door.

 

While we were trying to figure out which pieces to bring in to the shop we had a chance to visit a home where the owner was moving out and wanted to get rid of several pieces. Just in time! I'll share them with you in the next LTV post next week.

Let's Talk Vintage! #80: A Whirlwind of a Week & Some Shop Updates

 

 

Welcome to Let's Talk Vintage!

This week will be short and sweet...

 with just a couple of shop updates.

 

I'm hitting the fleamarket bright and

early today... my first of the season so

this post was done last night and

scheduled for this morning.

 

 

Two pieces of chalk painted furniture sold over the weekend, which was fantastic, but left us with two holes in the front showroom.

The hubby helped me get two more pieces ready. I worked on this buttercream vanity which can also work well as a desk. I left the drawers untouched and loved the contrast.

 

And believe it or not, the hubby re-finished

this triple-mirror vanity.

 

I loved how he added a slight silver glimmer

to the existing drawer pulls.

 

The chalk paint is Parisian Gray.

  

The only thing that didn't work out well

was his photo! He is a blog newbie...

and shhhhh - he doesn't like his photo

being displayed on the internet!

We won't tell him!

Let's Talk Vintage #78: Almost Ready - A Sneak Peek at Our New Shop!

Today I'm giving you a sneak peek

into the new brick and mortar shop!

It is located in what used to be an old
barn... and this stone wall is a perfect
backdrop for vintage things.  

 

 

I've been perfecting my chalk painting abilities.
Learning a few lessons here and there!

So, above is a before and after shot of my first piece of furniture. The harp phone table had really great bones
but the seat cover was a 1950's teal and vinyl piece. It really was awful with the mahogany finish.
(And I forgot to take a full BEFORE photo.)

 

I used Parisian Gray chalk paint from ACMoore, found

a great stencil on Amazon and wonderful French

script fabric with keys at JoAnn Fabrics.

Bebe loved it so much she kept asking

if she could have it! I'm finding out

with a lot of pieces that I wish I had done

these makeovers a long time ago!

 

(There is the check-out counter which has a sordid past life, we believe, as I wrote about here.)

This is a wide shot I took a last week.

 You'll see in another photo below, how
much more things we have filled in.

 

My partner in crime friend, Kathy, has

brought in a couple of her pieces. She made over
a dresser turned buffet, and vanity.
The room really started to take shape.

 

 

Last week I showed you this pedestal table I

was painting. I used the Parisian Gray again along

with an antiquey white chalk paint from Lowes,

then a French stencil. The table had a neat

raised trim along the edge and I went over

that with the same white, giving it a little

bit of contrast... I loved this table too and

wanted to keep it! But, I can't... so into

the shop it goes.

 

 Here is the latest photo which shows how much more we
have added to the shop.

We just acquired this piece over the weekend.

The hubs gave this piece a completely different look. Except the knobs. They were already there.
In this case, we made our own chalk paint
using calcium carbonate and some oops paint.
I found the Martha Stewart stencil on clearance
at AC Moore.

And yes, that is some LuRay in the cabinet.
I had extra pieces when my Mother gave me
the plates she wasn't using. I decided this
cabinet was too cute for just any old plates.

 

We've painted several pieces with chalk paint.

Note the coffee table above... it is from my

living room! I just had to paint it as it has a

glass top. I absolutely love it now! 

As soon as I paint a piece, I instantly love it.

Let's Talk Vintage #77: Movin' In

This week I'm working on setting up my

new shop... moved some things in yesterday.

 

My hubby worked on a check-out counter

on Saturday... it is really neat. An old

piece that looked like it was a bar in

someone's basement. When we found the

bead board beauty it was covered in

layers of dirt or what looked like dried beer!

Ugh!

And it also had some lovely green kitchen

tile as the top! Now it is clean and painted

white again with a chalk board top.

 

It has been redeemed!

A really cool transformation.

 

Soon I'll show how I transformed this table!

I love it so much now that I don't want to

sell it... but that is the point of

having a shop, right?

 

 

We're pretty excited about getting

more things into the shop and all

set up. This is a piece my friend Kathy

will be bringing to the shop.

I can't wait to see it all finished.

 

 

It has been very interesting

to see how I've gone from only

selling vintage to actually working

on painting furniture and other

pieces! I feel like I am getting

in touch with my artistic side!

The hubs enjoys helping me, too.

 

I'll have more photos in the coming

weeks... but for now I'm going

to go right to the features.

Today I'm sharing a chalk paint project

 that I hope will be the first of many,

and I have some exciting news!

First, the chalk paint project:

 

 

A French Tool Caddy!

I guess saying, "not too shabby" would be a bad thing.

So, it is shabby and that was the look I was going for!
 

 

Of course I forgot to take the before
photo so I have a photo mid-way.

I used paint from Lowes, at least
I think it is Lowes that carries
Valspar chalk paint. The Hubs
bought it for me and said "Why
is this paint so expensive????"

After doing some research
a friend and I are now
making our own... that way
we can use any color we'd like.

The brush I bought at AC Moore.

And whooo Nellie! Stenciling
turned out to be much

harder than I thought it would be!

 

The first one always is, right?

Let's hope!

And now for my exciting news! What

could it be?

 

No, there is not going to be another

Bebe in the house. I know what

you're thinking!

 

No, no, no, no. I think the

ship has sailed on that one.

But this is also a big deal:

 

I am finally going to open a brick and

mortar shop!

 

Yes! Something very new and

exciting. So much to do and plan.

 

And of course, you will be able

to see the progress as we go along.
